Subaru Impreza Versus the Mitsubishi Evo. Are They Starting to Show Their Age?
Subaru Impreza Versus the Mitsubishi Evo. Are They Starting to Show Their Age?
The first Mitsubishi Evo arrived in 1992 and the Subaru Impreza quickly followed it one year later. From that moment on, these two cars became arch rivals who would frequently lock horns both on the tough stages of the World Rally Championship, and in the pub bragging stakes as the debate raged over which was better, the Impreza or the Evo.
On paper both these cars seemed identical, both had 2 litre turbo charged engines, both had permanent four wheel drive and through the many variations that followed both grew increasingly more conspicuous wings, spoilers and flared wheel arches.
No matter which one of these Japanese road rockets you eventually favoured, the general consensus of opinion was that for a single lap of the race track the edgy Mitsubishi Evo was considerably more fun. However for the drive to and from the track you would stick with the more comfortable, but just as capable Subaru Impreza.
Sadly whilst both the Impreza and Evo were born to compete on the demanding gravel, tarmac and mud strewn roads of the word rally stage, both manufacturers have now withdrawn from the competition, and the kudos and respect that it once drew has been lost. After all, where else could you see your favourite car win a round of the world rally championship at the weekend, and then use the very same version for your Monday morning commute.
As their rallying glory days start to slip in to the past, Mitsubishi and Subaru have now released new versions of their fabled road cars in the shape of the Evo X, and the Subaru Sti. However, is the era of the four door supercar eater starting to pass? Especially now as the front wheel drive hot hatch seems to be making such a resurgence.
Whilst Mitsubishi has continued with the four door saloon theme, Subaru has bravely branched out and made the new Impreza a hatchback. Time will tell whether this has been a wise move, however from their powerful xenon headlight bulbs at the front to their high winged spoiler at the back, both cars still look ready to take on a rally stage, and more importantly both cars have the performance and handling to humble more exotic machinery.
Sadly the motoring press has not been too kind to either of these new versions, with many believing that previous generations of both the Evo and Impreza offered more involvement and driver enjoyment. This problem has been compounded by the new range of hot hatches from Ford, Vauxhall and Renault, which offer similar levels of performance for a lot less fuss.
The latest Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi Evo are still incredible cars, however they no longer have the field to themselves and as car manufactures seek to economise further on their production, we may start to see these niche models disappearing.

Consumer Reports Summary for the Subaru Impreza
Consumer Reports Summary for the Subaru Impreza
In its early years, the Subaru Impreza started out as a good car that consumers could buy for reasonable price, but with new models coming out almost every year, the Impreza has evolved into one of the most reliable and speedy sedan cars on the market. In fact, by 2008 the Impreza became a Consumer Reports recommended vehicle. And, it is still a pretty affordable purchase. Although the Honda Civic still comes first in sales for sedan cars ,000 and under, the Impreza has been rated “the most fun to drive” for several years in a row.
Another thing that sets the Impreza apart from its competition is all-wheel drive. With energy going to all of the wheels, the Impreza has been described as a car that sticks to the road like glue and handles corners very well. Combined with short breaking, this makes it a very reliable vehicle. In addition to affordability, safety and all-wheel drive, the Impreza is also fast enough to compete in races. This is one reason why some consumers enjoy driving them so much,
Drawbacks
In spite of all the things that consumers like about the Impreza, there are definitely a few drawbacks that repeatedly crop up in consumer reports. For example, gas mileage is not that great. On the highway, the Impreza might get as much as 25-mpg and in the city it might get as much as 19-mpg. In a world with rising gas prices and global warming, 25-mpg is nothing to brag about.
Another common complaint is that the Impreza is ugly. Subaru has made significant efforts to alleviate this problem though and appearance is a pretty subjective quality.
Third, many consumers believe that the back seat is cramped. Subaru has made the interior more spacious over the years, but the cramped complaint still stands. Compared to more fuel-efficient cars, like the smart car, the Impreza feels like a mansion though.
And finally, when the Impreza does need repairs, they can be pretty costly. In fact, in 2003, Subaru had the highest warranty repair costs.
You might not be able to do anything about the gas mileage, the space, and the appearance, but as a consumer, you can lower repair costs by ordering discount Subaru Impreza parts online. If you know the part number searches can be quick and easy, but even general descriptions of a particular part can help you find the replacement part that you need.

New Subaru Impreza Wrx Goes on Sale in Japan
New Subaru Impreza Wrx Goes on Sale in Japan
Subaru’s new Impreza WRX goes on sale in Japan this week as a late 2007 model, and with it come greater anticipation for the high-performance STI version, which won’t be officially revealed until the Tokyo auto show in October later this year.
The Subaru Impreza WRX five-door hatchback (known as the Impreza S-GT in Japan) features a turbocharged 2.0-liter version of the Subaru boxer-4, and it produces 248 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. When this car hits U.S. shores this fall as a 2008 model, it will have a 2.5-liter iteration of this engine that produces about 225 hp and 226 pound-feet of torque. In the UK, tight European emissions laws mean buyers won’t be offered the WRX model when the hatch arrives there later this year.
Meanwhile, the “wilder”, high-performance 2008 Subaru WRX STI expected to remain under cover until the Tokyo auto show already has a few key facts leaked.
The WRX STI draws motorsports technology directly from Subaru expertise in World Rally Championship (WRC) competition and is designed to appeal to the most serious driving enthusiasts. STI stands for Subaru Tecnica International — the high-performance and motorsports subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.
The highly anticipated STI is set to be powered by a tuned version of the 2.5-litre boxer engine turbocharged to produce more than 300hp and around 400Nm of torque, be mated to Subaru’s existing six-speed manual box. A new automated manual, sourced from specialist firm Aisin, is expected to join the line-up when the latest Impreza is facelifted in 2009.
Subaru is making sure that the new Impreza can and will give its archrival, the 2008 Mitsubishi Evo X – which will feature an optional twin-clutch sequential-manual gearbox with steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles – a run for its money.
The top Impreza will offer a range of unique styling additions, including a specially developed bonnet, grille and a wide front bumper with big air intakes.
Flared wheelarches house smart 18-inch alloys, which will hide the existing STI’s Brembo brake system. Buyers can expect to see minor tweaks to the all-wheel-drive system, and engineers have also taken the opportunity to tune the handling, thanks to a more compact double wishbone rear suspension set-up.
Inside, the new Impreza range boasts higher-quality trim, with the STI getting a pair of supportive bucket seats up front to boost its sporty appeal.
Subaru (maker of top of the line Subaru oxygen sensor), has also told Inside Line that a turbocharged boxer-4 diesel for the WRX is in the works and should be out by early 2009. The company is reportedly eager to drop a high-mpg diesel into the Forester and Impreza soon after the Legacy gets Subaru’s first diesel next summer, so the WRX is part of the program. Sources from Subaru have also reportedly confirmed that the company is working on a five-speed automatic and a continuously variable transmission, and both these options could be offered as early as mid-2009.
Subaru is a Japanese car company and is the automotive division of Fuji Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (FHI). It is currently an affiliate of Toyota Motor Corporation, with it owning 8.7% of FHI. They acquired that stake from General Motors, who bought 20% of FHI in 1999 to have an extended presence in international markets, and collaborate technologically with FHI.
FHI has recently set a new theme for Subaru cars that emphasizes Subaru’s goal: Subaru offers a comfortable, pleasant drive for the driver and passengers; provides peace of mind and reliability; and extends convenience, utility and functionality.
